Cookie policy
Every cookie and piece of browser storage the website uses, and how to control them.
Cookies are small files a website keeps in your browser. This page lists every cookie, and everything else, that The Wolfsbane Library keeps in your browser, why, and for how long. Our Privacy notice explains what we do with personal data more generally.
Strictly necessary
These make the shop work, so they are always on. They are set only by our own website, and none of them tracks you across other sites.
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
| wl_ship | Remembers the destination you ship to, so prices are in your currency | One year |
| wl_track | Lets this browser show an order you looked up, without asking again | One hour |
| wl_orders | Keeps the references of orders placed in this browser (and nothing else), so you can find them again under Track an order. You can remove it from the order page | One year |
| wl_fix | Lets this browser correct the email address of an order it found through "Didn't get your email?" | 30 minutes |
| wl_consent | Remembers what you allowed below, with a random reference to the record of your choice (which holds nothing that identifies you) | Six months |
The website also keeps these in your browser's own storage, which never leaves your device:
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your basket | The books in your basket | Until you empty it or clear your browser's data |
| Checkout details | What you typed at checkout, so it is still there if you go back to change your basket | Until you close the tab |
Only if you allow them
The cookie banner asks for each purpose below separately, and none is switched on until you choose. "Reject all" is one click, just like "Accept all", and closing the banner is never taken as agreement.
Measuring visits
| Name | Set by | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga, ga* | Google Analytics | Tells visits apart, to count how the shop is used | Two years |
Advertising and partners
| Name | Set by | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| _gcl_au, gcl* | Google Ads | Links an order to the advert that led to it | 90 days |
| wl_aff | Our website, for impact.com | Keeps the click reference of the affiliate partner who sent you, so they can be paid for an order | The referral period, usually 30 days |
| wl_conv_* | Our website (browser storage) | Makes sure an order is counted only once | Until you clear your browser's data |
Google may also set cookies on its own domains when it measures an advert. See how Google uses cookies.
Videos and audio from other sites
Some Marginalia articles include a player from YouTube (in its privacy-enhanced mode), Vimeo, Spotify or SoundCloud. Until you allow this purpose, or press play on one player, nothing is loaded from those services: a notice stands in its place, with a link to open it on the service's own site instead. Once a player is loaded, the service that hosts it receives your IP address and may set its own cookies, under its own policy: YouTube (Google), Vimeo, Spotify, SoundCloud.
Signing in to the back office
Our staff's sign-in uses two more strictly necessary cookies, which visitors never get: one keeps a member of staff signed in (it ends after 30 minutes without use, and after eight hours at most), and one remembers a device they chose to trust, for 30 days.
Changing your mind
Use "Cookie settings" at the foot of every page to change your choice at any time, purpose by purpose: withdrawing is as easy as agreeing. When you withdraw a purpose, we remove its cookies from our website and stop what it was running (a player already playing stops when the page reloads). Your choice is asked for again after six months, or sooner if what we ask for changes. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser's settings: the shop still works without the optional ones, but it needs the strictly necessary ones to remember your basket, your destination and your orders.
